April 4, 10, May 1, 8, 2019 – Regina – Birding by Ear – WORKSHOP FULL

The four evening sessions will focus on listening for differences in bird songs and calls, the use of mnemonics, and visual learning using sonograms (i.e., from recordings of bird song) and get you ready for prime bird song season. Participants are expected to attend all four evening classes to get the most out of this workshop.By attending the Birding by Ear workshop, a series of four 2-hour evening sessions, you will be able to answer these questions and:

  • identify songs and calls of 50+ bird species found in five major southern Saskatchewan habitats – native grasslands, agricultural fields, farmyards, wetlands, and urban forests; and
  • describe how and why birds sing as well as what other noises they use to communicate.

This free 2-hour workshop will focus on the basics of bird identification to help you get started with identifying the birds around you. It is aimed at novice birders but can also be a good refresher for those who haven’t looked through binoculars in a while. Bring a bird identification field guide and/or download the free Merlin app onto your smartphone if you have one.
