Excerpts Adapted from the Birds of Saskatchewan:
This vireo has a retiring demeanour and prefers the upper reaches of tall trees. The males are best identified by their single, languid warble of 8-20 connected notes (Saunders 1951, Peterson 1980). Current research may prove that the Warbling Vireo is actually two species. Genetic, morphological, vocal, and ecological differences have been examined, but more study is needed (AOU 1998). The Warbling Vireo is widely distributed in North America, breeding in most of settled Canada except Newfoundland and in nearly all of the US except the southeast. It winters from western Mexico south to northwestern Nicaragua.
This species is found in mature deciduous forests (especially near water), farm shelterbelts, and mature residential areas.
The Warbling Vireo is a common summer resident across the grasslands (locally) and parklands. Farther north it is an uncommon summer resident in the southern boreal region and rare in the northern boreal region (Smith 1996).
