Excerpts Adapted from the Birds of Saskatchewan:
Unlike many rarities, which are spotted by keen birders covering regular hotspots, most Snowy Plovers are seen by professionals surveying large saline lakes for shorebirds, especially Piping Plovers. Few birders have the time to cover vast expanses of mud and sand flats for a glimpse of this elusive bird. Although the species normally nests only as near as the American Great Basin, a few refugees of drought or flood make their way to Saskatchewan to breed. The first record of the species was an adult male collected at Buck [Bratt's] Lake, a small shallow lake south of Regina, 31 May 1964 (Wade 1964).
Nests on the vast, sparsely vegetated mud and sand flats of the shallow saline lakes of the south.
With fewer than 30 records, the Snowy Plover is best described as a rare summer visitor and very rare breeder in Saskatchewan.
