Excerpts Adapted from the Birds of Saskatchewan:

"When a brown-backed swallow, a bit bigger and a stronger flyer than the Bank Swallow, catches our attention, we finally confirm that it lacks a breast band and has a dusky throat. We stop and watch the 1, 2 or 3 pairs fly up and down the creek, sometimes exploring a cutbank or landing on a dead tree branch? (De Jong 1996). Although fairly common, it is easily missed. This swallow has a wide breeding range from southern British Columbia to New Brunswick, south to Peru, Paraguay, and Argentina.

Except during migration, when it may be seen in association with other swallows, the species is rarely found far from its nesting habitat. Nest tunnels are placed in banks and cliffs along watercourses and in badlands or artificial sites such as gravel pits or road cuts (Smith 1996).

This is "an uncommon and very local summer resident of the grasslands and southern parklands? (Smith 1996). The northern limit of its breeding range is generally marked by the South Saskatchewan and Qu'Appelle Rivers, with a lobe extending north to include Eagle and Beaver [Brightwater] Creeks, and Maidstone and Maymont on the North Saskatchewan River.
