Atlas Results
Eastern Wood-Pewee were heard in riparian habitats along creeks and rivers in the southeastern corner of the province, including the Qu'Appelle Valley east of Round Lake, Pipestone Creek east of Grenfell, and the Souris River east of Roche Percée. They were also recorded at Moose Mountain and Duck Mountain. In all, Eastern Wood-Pewee were found in 16 atlas squares with breeding confirmed at Roche Percee Campground, and at two locations along the Qu'Appelle Valley at East Ekapo Lake and Spy Hill Community Pasture.
Excerpts Adapted from the Birds of Saskatchewan:
By sight, the Eastern Wood-Pewee is virtually indistinguishable from its occidental cousin, the Western Wood-Pewee, but it has a distinctively different song. Birders should listen for this bird wherever there are stands of mature deciduous forest in the southeastern portion of the province. From Saskatchewan its breeding range extends east to the Maritimes and south to the Gulf coast; it winters from Colombia and Venezuela south to Bolivia and western Brazil.
The species' favoured habitat is mature deciduous forest. This includes riparian woodlands as found along the Souris and Qu'Appelle Rivers or the upland forest in Moose Mountain and Duck Mountain Provincial Parks
It was not until Wayne Harris taped its song at Good Spirit Lake, 11 Jun 1977, that modern substantiation of the Eastern Wood-Pewee in the province was achieved. Today it is a rare but regular summer resident in the southeastern corner of the province (Smith 1996). The species is most abundant along the eastern Qu'Appelle (David Hatch), the Estevan area (Chris Adam SBDB) and it also appears to be of regular occurrence at Kenosee and Little Kenosee Lakes in Moose Mountain Provincial Park. Records of possible breeding (based on singing males) extend north to Bainbridge [River] in the Pasquia Hills and west to Round Prairie and Bethune.
