Excerpts Adapted from the Birds of Saskatchewan:

Eastern and Spotted Towhees overlap in the eastern Qu'Appelle Valley, therefore observers should pay special attention to any towhees seen there. The breeding range of the Eastern Towhee extends from southeastern Saskatchewan, southern Manitoba, southern Ontario, and southwestern Maine, south to Texas, the Gulf coast, and Florida, and west to Colorado (AOU 1998). Its main wintering range is in the southeastern US.

The Eastern Towhee's habitat requirements are similar to those of the Spotted Towhee: dense shrubbery, mainly in riparian areas. Where the two species overlap in the Qu'Appelle Valley, the Eastern Towhee prefers the moister, north-facing slopes (Koes in Taylor et al. 2003). Migrating birds have been seen in hedgerows, urban gardens, and farmsteads.

The Eastern Towhee is restricted to the southeastern corner of the province from Good Spirit Lake and Duck Mountain south through the Qu'Appelle Valley (west to Craven), through Moose Mountain, to the Souris River (west to Roche Percée). A number of migrating or wintering birds have been seen north and west of its breeding range. Does hybridize with Spotted Towhee in areas of overlap.
