Excerpts Adapted from the Birds of Saskatchewan:
Found in most of southern Canada from Alberta to Nova Scotia, this phoebe on territory quickly establishes favourite perches from which it sallies on light wings to capture its insect prey. Returning to its branch, it bobs its tail up and down as if toasting another successful flight. The Eastern Phoebe breeds from west-central Northwest Territories and the Maritimes to the northern portions of the Gulf states, and winters from the southern US south through eastern Mexico to Oaxaca (AOU 1998).
While its natural breeding habitat is cutbanks near water, this species also uses bridges and buildings and has thus benefited from settlement (Smith 1996). As a migrant it may occur anywhere there is cover.
The Eastern Phoebe is a fairly common summer resident from Stony Rapids and Brabant Lake in the northern boreal region, south to the southern edge of the parklands (Smith 1996). Farther south, but near water, it is also found almost anywhere there are creeks and bridges, or lakeshores with cabins. During migration it is found in small numbers in the northern and eastern portions of the grasslands.
