Atlas Results

Brewer's Sparrow were found in the Mixed Grassland and Cypress Upland ecoregions in 74 atlas squares. Detections were concentrated in the native grasslands of the extreme southwest, particularly along the US border, from Alberta to the East Block of Grasslands National Park where both relative abundance and probability of observation were highest. Brewer's Sparrows were heard at 117 point count locations; most often only one bird was heard singing, with a maximum count of three individuals detected at three separate locations. Breeding was confirmed in three atlas squares, consisting of a nest with four featherless young on 14 June 2017, a nest with three eggs on 30 June 2020, and an adult carrying food on 15 July 2020.

Excerpts Adapted from the Birds of Saskatchewan:

The diminutive Brewer's Sparrow frequents the arid southwestern part of the province, wherever sagebrush dominates the landscape. Its unique and lengthy song, comprising a long series of notes and trills, readily gives away its presence and distinguishes it from any other prairie songbird. Breeds in the west from Yukon to Arizona and winters in the southern US and northern Mexico.

Arid grassland with lowland shrubs, especially sagebrush, is the preferred habitat of the Brewer's Sparrow. In premium habitat, it can be found in relatively dense concentrations: Godfrey (1950) found 18 in sagebrush south of Govenlock on 21 Jun 1948.

The Brewer's Sparrow is a fairly common summer resident of sage flats of the shortgrass prairie, especially along the Frenchman River and its tributaries. It is uncommon and local in the mixedgrass prairie north to the South Saskatchewan River and east to Rockglen (Smith 1996, RDW).
