Excerpts Adapted from the Birds of Saskatchewan:
The Bay-breasted Warbler is one of the warbler species, along with Cape May and Tennessee, that gather in high numbers during outbreaks of spruce budworm (Williams 1996). The breeding range of the Bay-breasted Warbler is almost entirely limited to Canada and it is found from the Yukon to Newfoundland. Winters as far south as Costa Rica, Panama, and Curaçao.
Found in mature white spruce and balsam fir forests of the Boreal regions (Smith 1996). May occur in less mature conifer stands during spruce budworm outbreaks (Smith 1996). These birds avoid competition with other spruce-loving warblers by foraging mainly on larger branches in the middle to upper part of the canopy (Morse 1989, Cumming 2004).
"In most years it is an uncommon summer resident of mature white spruce/balsam fir forest of the Boreal regions. During Spruce Budworm outbreaks it can become one of the more common birds in the affected regions. As a transient it is rare in the extreme southwest and uncommon in the rest of the province south of the breeding range? (Smith 1996).
